

PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. -- The Washington and Lee golf team carded an opening day score of 303 on the Dye Course to tie for 19th out of 36 teams at the NCAA Division III Championship held at the PGA Village on Wednesday afternoon.
Host Methodist University leads the field after the first round, carding a team score of 279 (-9), while MU's Tom Cooper and LaVerne's Mitchell Fedorka lead the individual scoring with identical scores of 67 (-5).
Junior Joe Gibson (Atlanta, Ga./Westminster) leads the way for the Generals after shooting a first round score of 73 (+1) to rank in a tie for 32nd place out of 185 competitors. Classmate Robert Womble (Raleigh, N.C./Broughton) is tied for 52nd with a 75 (+3), while junior Brad Watts (Sewickley, Pa./Sewickley Academy) is tied for 89th with a 77 (+5). Senior Andrew Green (Birmingham, Ala./Mountain Brook) and junior Matt Langan (Prospect, Ky./Trinity) round out the W&L individuals. Green is tied for 105th with a 78 (+6), while Langan is tied for 163rd with an 84 (+12).
Action continues on Thursday with the second round from the PGA Village. The Generals will tee off at 10:20 am and will play the Ryder Course.
