Angus McBryde '82

Arguably the finest distance runner in the history of Washington and Lee is Angus McBryde '84. McBryde starred in both cross country and track, earning All-America honors in cross country and setting several records in track.

In cross country, McBryde earned All-ODAC and all-region honors three years and helped W&L to its first ODAC Championship in 1982. McBryde was the ODAC Runner of the Year in 1983 and he became W&L's first All-American that season. McBryde ran an 8K time of 24:19 at the NCAA Division III championships that season, still the W&L course record.

In track and field, he was a dominant force in the 1,500 and 5,000 meter runs. McBryde helped W&L to ODAC titles at both the indoor and outdoor championships his senior season in 1984. McBryde won the 1,500 meter championship at the ODAC outdoor meet three times, running a conference record time of 3:58.7 in 1984. In 1983, he qualified for the NCAA championship in the 1,500 and still holds the school record in that event with a time of 3:53.6. McBryde also won ODAC titles in the 5,000 meter run in 1983 and 1984. His best time of 14:54.1 in the 5,000 was the school record for 14 years. McBryde also ran the lead leg on the 4x800 relay team in 1984 which still holds the school record time of 7:49.9. McBryde was co-captain of the cross country and track teams his senior year.
