Inclement Weather Information

Campus Emergency Hotline: GOCLASS (462-5277)
(dial x5277 from on-campus extensions)

In case of inclement weather, call the Campus Emergency Hotline above for adjusted class schedules/office operations. When a decision is made to cancel classes and/or alter the University's regular schedule, the Communications Office will place a message on the Campus Emergency Hotline stating changes in the University schedule. Weather-related announcements will also appear on the W&L Web site.

If class schedules have not been adjusted and you do not believe you can safely make it to class or work, do not come. Contact your faculty member or supervisor to explain your absence.

In addition to posting announcements on the Campus Emergency Hotline and the University Web site, the Communications Office will contact the general media and inform them of the change. This is actually the first contact that will be made and the first place you will be able to learn of schedule alterations. Media organizations to be contacted include:

  • WLUR (91.5 FM)
  • WREL (96.7 FM)
  • WVTF (101.9 FM)
  • WMRA (89.9 FM)
  • WDBJ (CBS 7 - Channel 6 in Lexington)
  • WSLS (NBC 10 - Channel 9 in Lexington)
  • WSET (ABC 13 - Channel 12 in Lexington)
  • Cable 18

Please contact the Communications Office at x8460 if you have any questions concerning this plan.

If the University either remains open or delays its opening during inclement weather conditions, employees and/or students are not advised to travel if they feels that they cannot do so safely. Commuting students, faculty and non-essential staff should exercise their best personal judgment with regard to their own local road conditions and other safety concerns. Faculty are asked to be understanding about student absence. Faculty members who cannot safely get to campus should notify the department and/or respective dean's office so that a notice can be posted in the classroom if possible. Faculty are also encouraged to email their students directly if class will not be held.

Staff members should notify an immediate supervisor of a personal decision to delay arrival or be absent. For additional information regarding the University's inclement weather policy for employees, including special instructions for essential staff, please visit page 31 of the Employee Handbook.
