
Washington and Lee had a pair of athletes honored by the Old Dominion Athletic conference, as W&L garnered the Player of the Week awards for both field hockey and volleyball for the week ending November 2.
Senior forward Christina Merchant (Midlothian, Va./Collegiate) was named the field hockey Player of the Week for her performance in the Generals' 5-1 win over Virginia Wesleyan in the quarterfinals of the ODAC tournament on Saturday. Merchant tallied two goals, including the game winner, as the Generals advanced to Wednesday's semifinal round. She is currently second on the team in scoring with 18 points on seven goals and four assists. The Generals are currently 10-8 on the season and will take on No. 1 seed Eastern Mennonite in Wednesday's semifinal round of the ODAC tournament at 6:30 pm.
Junior outside hitter Rachael Phillips (Tampa, Fla./Tampa Prep) garnered the volleyball weekly award for the second time this season. Phillips totaled 53 kills and 70 digs in leading W&L to wins in four matches last week. Phillips notched 17 kills and 30 digs in a 3-1 win over Centre and 10 kills and 16 digs in a 3-0 sweep of Randolph-Macon. Phillips now has 875 career kills and ranks ninth all-time at W&L in that category. The Generals closed out the regular season with a 28-6 overall record. Additionally, they posted a 10-0 league ledger and are the No. 1 seed in this weekend's ODAC tournament.
