SALEM, Va. – Washington and Lee University has had three student-athletes earn Old Dominion Athletic Conference athlete of the week honors for the week ending October 5.
The three honorees marks the second-consecutive week that W&L has had three athletes honored. Senior right side Jessica Ulrich (Gettysburg, Pa./Gettysburg) was named the ODAC volleyball player of the week, while first-year defender Page Minton (Bowling Green, Ky./Bowling Green) was tabbed as the conference’s women’s soccer player of the week. Junior linebacker Matt Cassilly (Gambrills, Md./Archbishop Spaulding) earned ODAC Defensive Player of the Week honors for football.
Ulrich led the W&L volleyball team to a 4-0 record last week to run the Generals’ record to 14-4 overall and 5-0 in the ODAC on the season. In the team’s 3-1 win over Emory & Henry on Wednesday, Ulrich tallied season-highs with 15 kills and 16 digs. She then notched 11 kills while hitting .688 in W&L’s 3-0 sweep of Mary Baldwin on Saturday.
Minton recorded two goals and two assists as the women’s soccer team defeated Sweet Briar, 5-0, on Wednesday. For the season, Minton has appeared in 10 games for the Generals, making six starts for the Generals (7-3, 5-1).
In the Generals 28-16 Homecoming win over Randolph-Macon on Saturday, Cassilly was credited with 12 tackles (7 solo), 1.5 sacks, a fumble recovery and an interception. Cassilly helped the W&L (4-1, 1-0) defense limit R-MC running back Zak Thornton to a season-low 37 yards on 14 carries, and he currently leads the Generals with 36 tackles and 2.5 sacks.
