Arts

As a liberal-arts university, the W&L community supports a variety of endeavors in the fine arts. Many students enjoy our a-capella groups Southern Comfort (men), JubiLee (women) and General Admission (co-ed). There are a number of traditional groups including chamber singers, university chorus, jazz ensemble and an orchestra that allow students to continue their musical passions. Do you prefer movement and action to musical expression? Check out our dance program or one of the many theater productions hosted at the Lenfest Center.

Interested in exploring your artistic side off-campus? You might enjoy the First Fridays Art Walk, when galleries like Lexington Art, Nelson and Studio Eleven hold opening receptions showcasing their new exhibits. Lime Kiln Theater is a distinctive outdoor venue that hosts concerts, plays and special events throughout the year. Rockbridge County plays host to many craft festivals through the year and even more specific experiences like the Apple Butter Festival at Wade’s Mill. We believe that simply exploring the beautiful surroundings of the Shenandoah Valley should easily provide some inspiration for your next canvas!

For those students interested in focusing a great deal on the arts in college, we recommend getting in touch with one of our dedicated faculty members. Don’t worry though, many students on campus enjoy being involved with artistic groups with having them monopolize their time. Even if you aren’t one of the many students involved actively with the arts, you can be sure there will be plenty of opportunities to observe and enjoy both student productions around campus and precious art at the Reeves Center.
