Student Organizations

There’s never a dull moment at Washington and Lee. With over 130 clubs and organizations, countless service opportunities and 15 national fraternities and 7 national sororities on campus your calendar will be full within days of joining the campus community.

We’ve got something for everyone. From the outdoor enthusiast to the investment expert, and everything in between. The largest club on campus is the Outing Club which lends canoes, kayaks, tents, camping equipment and the like to club members. Besides providing students with the supplies to explore the Rockbridge County area the Outing Club is also concerned with preserving the natural beauty of the area by sponsoring trail clean-up days. If getting down and dirty isn’t your style, then join the Williams Investment Society. WIS was endowed with $1 million of the school’s money to invest in the stock market. They’ve made some smart decisions because today WIS’s portfolio is worth about $1.6 million. Not enough for you? Students on campus can start their own clubs and organizations. Every year the Executive Committee of the Student Body is endowed with money to fund clubs on campus.

When not hiking House Mountain or playing the stock market, W&L Generals give back to their community. The Nabors Service League organizes service opportunities ranging from tutoring local children to coaching area sports teams or preparing meals for low income families in the Lexington area. W&L is one of 12 campuses nationwide that supports its very own Campus Kitchens Project. CKP prepares meals for local families and organizations using unused food from the University. Last year alone Campus Kitchens provided 10,040 meals. W&L also supports its very own Habitat for Humanity chapter.

Not sure how to get started? All of our 15 national fraternities and 7 national sororities are affiliated with both a local and national philanthropy. Besides giving back to the community our Greek organizations are a vibrant part of campus life. Since our system is owned and operated by the University we can insure you an experience that’s unparalleled by other campuses. We have house mothers that live alongside our students in the houses to take care of day-to-day operations. When an organization hosts an event that event is open to the entire University community meaning there is no guest list and no need to pay your way in the door. When it comes down to it, our students are encouraged to get involved. Whether it’s starting a club, volunteering in your free time or joining a Greek organization, you can’t go wrong!
