St Andrews-W&L Partnership

Washington and Lee University and the University of St Andrews have joined in a partnership, providing a quality study abroad experience for students in the sciences and students interested in the health professions. As part of this program, participating students may enroll for specific science classes which will receive credit and a grade on a W&L transcript; additionally, premed students may elect to take part in a special premedical seminar offered by a member of the St. Andrews Medical Faculty which includes site visits to area hospitals and clinics. Students registering for the program for fall term and who wish to participate in the special W&L orientation program held in London, Edinburgh and the Scottish Highlands apply and are enrolled directly through W&L Center International Education. Students not wishing to participate in the orientation activities or who plan to go winter term may apply directly to St. Andrews as a Visiting Student. Students on the program will live with other St Andrews students in university housing and have access to all normal university activities and facilities there.

Course of Study

All students on the program must complete at least 60 credit hours in the St Andrews system to be considered full-time. Students normally are not allowed to register for more than 70 credit hours. Students should generally plan to enroll in 2000, 3000 or 4000 level classes in the humanities, although it is possible to enroll in a new subject at a lower level.

Non-science track:

Enroll in any course offerings at St Andrews described in the course catalog.  Credit will be awarded for courses taken but grades will not be part of the W&L transcript, as per W&L study abroad policy.

Science track:

Sciences courses currently approved for W&L transcript credit include:

Fall or Martinmas Term (subject to change)

  • Chem 241s/CH2201 Organic Chemistry (4 W&L credits)
  • Bio 240s/BL 2102 Zoology (6 W&L credits)
  • Bio 340s/BL 2103 Evolutionary Biology (6 W&L credits)
  • Bio 211s/BL 2101 Cell Structure and function (6 W&L credits)

Winter or Candlemas Term (subject to change)

  • None at this time.

Students taking one of these classes will receive credit and a grade for the class on a W&L transcript. This is particularly valuable for pre-med students as required courses for medical school admission, such as organic chemistry, must normally be taken at U.S. universities.

Students planning to take Organic Chemistry must have approval of the W&L Chemistry Department. Prof. Marcia France oversees the course at St Andrews. Students planning to take Biology courses must have approval of the W&L Biology department. Dr. Helen I'Anson serves as the Program Coordinator for the Biology department at W&L.

Students are free to choose other courses from the St Andrews curriculum in so far as prerequisites and departmental policies there allow (there may be courses for which you are not eligible). In the past, some pre-med students have elected to take such classes as The Geography of Health. There may be other courses of particular interest to students planning a health professions career as well.

Students should look through the St Andrews' course catalogue to find suitable course offerings; single semester courses are offered in increments of 10, 15, 20 and 30 credits.

Students at St Andrew for the Martinmas or fall semester there are scheduled to complete final assessments (exams or other assessment instruments) by the last day of classes before the Christmas holiday.

l Housing

Students on the program will be automatically enrolled in and integrated into normal St Andrews housing. Students will not be housed together as a program or as roommates. Unless otherwise requested (and at increased cost to the student), students will be assigned single rooms with shared bathroom facilities; students requesting a shared room (often results in a hall closer into the town center) may receive a small discount. Students may request an en-suite room at the extra, substantial charge. In most cases, students are encouraged to request housing with a full meal plan (19 meals per week). Students wishing to request a self-catering housing arrangement through the W&L program may do so. Please inform the program director of any special housing requests or needs by April 1.

What Will It Cost?

The cost of the fall term program with orientation is equivalent to W&L's comprehensive tuition, room and board fee. It is estimated that this will be approximately $21,500.00 for the Fall 2010 term (subject to change by the CIE office).

Included in this program fee are: all normal tuition costs, housing and meal plan (19 meals per week) at St Andrews, transatlantic airfare from Washington, DC, accommodation and activities during the orientation in London, Edinburgh, and the excursion to the Highlands at the beginning of the program (students are responsible for their own meal costs during this orientation period). Students must provide money for their own books, academic supplies, and personal needs throughout the program period. Please note: this cost is subject to change in case of significant currency variations or increases in the cost of services from the University of St Andrews or the orientation program providers. We will make every effort to inform you of any changes in a timely manner.

Financial aid must be awarded by the student's home university. For W&L students, all financial aid normally received may be applied to this program.

Who is Eligible?

The program is open to any W&L student, generally a sophomore or junior, with the prerequisite background and with a cumulative GPA of 3.000 or better.  For the science track, a grade of B (3.0) in relevant introductory science courses is required. Students with a lesser cumulative GPA may be accepted on a case-by-case basis. The program is also open to select qualified students from other U.S. institutions.

The application deadline for Fall 2010 is February 15, 2010. Click here for Science Application or Non-science Application. Applications must be accompanied by a $50.00 non-refundable application fee and should be submitted along with all supporting documentation to:
