In order to provide additional incentive for alumni and parents to meet the Lenfest Challenge, Gerry Lenfest is providing a special opportunity to endow named professorships within the Lenfest Challenge. Such gifts count toward the $33 million the University must raise to meet the challenge. Under guidelines established by the Board of Trustees as part of Honor Our Past, Build Our Future: The Campaign for Washington and Lee, a gift of $2.5 million is required to endow a professorship. To encourage the establishment of new professorships, Gerry Lenfest is willing to provide half the required funding as part of his gift. A donor can give or pledge $1.25 million to establish a named professorship endowment, and Gerry Lenfest will provide an equal amount into the named endowment.
Endowed professorships allow W&L to recognize its best teachers-scholars and to recruit, retain and support outstanding faculty over the generations. There is no better time to endow a professorship. Commitments will count in the new campaign. For more information or to discuss a professorship under the Lenfest Challenge, please contact Dennis Cross, vice president for University advancement at 540-458-8232 or dcross@wlu.edu, or Tres Mullis, executive director of University development at 540-458-8165 or tmullis@wlu.edu.
