The Generals were victorious in five of the 10 weight classes, but could not overcome two losses by pin and another by medical default as the Blue Jays (4-6, 2-3) posted their eighth-straight win over W&L.
Washington and Lee jumped out to a 6-0 lead on the strength of wins by decision at the 125-pound and 133-pound weight classes. First-year Ben Ersing (Beverly, Mass./St. John's Prep) notched a 5-1 win over JHU first-year Adam Stevens (New York, N.Y./Collegiate) at 125, while first-year Sam Campbell (Winnetka, Ill./New Trier) posted an 8-3 victory over first-year Mike Testa (Wayland, Mass./Wayland) at 133.
The Blue Jays registered wins at 141 and 149 to take a 9-6 advantage, before the Generals surged to a 12-9 lead as first-year David Dennis (Sherman, W.Va./Ravenswood) pinned JHU first-year William Selba (Selbyville, Del./Mt. St. Joseph) in 4:16.
After a loss at 165 knotted the score at 12-12, the Generals again assumed the lead (15-12) as junior Jon Brown (Waldorf, Md./Westlake) recorded a 3-2 win over senior Mike Keane (West Islip, N.Y./West Islip) in the 174 weight class. However, Hopkins secured the match with pins at 184 and 197 to assume a 24-15 lead heading into the final bout, where senior John Christopher (Fort Lauderdale, Fla./Cardinal Gibbons) notched a 3-2 win over sophomore Matt Rugani (Bronxville, N.Y./Bronxville) for the final margin.
