Financial Aid

Washington and Lee will invest over $21 million in financial aid and scholarships this year, making it possible for many students to attend who would be unable to do so without our help. Indeed, at W&L, admission and affordability go hand in hand. All admitted students meeting the need-based financial aid priority deadline (March 2, 2009) will receive an aid package that covers their family’s institutionally determined need entirely with grant funds. No loans. To apply, families should begin working on the CSS Profile and the FAFSA (both forms are required) when students begin working on the W&L application for admission. Please note, financial aid deadlines for students applying Early Decision can be found here.

The generous no-loan policy is only one outcome of last year’s $100 million gift establishing the Johnson Scholarship Program. Each year 44 students – nearly 10 percent of the incoming class – will win the prestigious Johnson Scholarship, covering a minimum of tuition, room and board. Other scholarships are available, too, such as the Heinz, Lewis, and Weinstein scholarships, as well a number of alumni and regional scholarships. To be considered for all forms of merit-based aid, students must complete the Johnson Scholarship application (Online or PDF) and submit it, along with their complete admission application, by December 1, 2008

We encourage students to apply for both need-based aid and merit-based aid, to ensure that they explore all possible sources of W&L funding. Please contact our Office of Financial Aid to take a closer look at financing a Washington and Lee education.
