Theater and Dance are essential forms of human expression that celebrate creative collaboration and foster critical engagement with the world community. By studying the history and practice of theater and dance as part of a comprehensive education in the liberal arts, students develop an aesthetic appreciation for art and culture, learn flexible problem solving methods, acquire diverse communication skills and apply techniques for creative collaboration. These academic abilities and artistic skills provide a framework for employing one's unique talent toward the improvement of society and the arts.
In support of the University's educational mission the Department of Theater provides a dynamic introduction to theater and dance production, performance and history/criticism. As a result of the academic and artistic experiences cultivated through our learner-centered program of study, many of our theater and dance students have developed successful careers in theater, dance, film, television, teaching, law, journalism and management, or have pursued graduate study.
The fully equipped Lenfest Hall is the department's home. We produce a season of theatrical events drawn from a wide range of periods and styles that engage students in all areas of the performing arts. Our performance season includes elaborately presented main stage plays and musicals, dance concerts, a playwright festival, a series of student-directed one act plays and a variety of student-generated workshop productions. Each year we invite a number of distinguished guest actors, directors, playwrights, choreographers, dancers, designers, or theater scholars to share their expertise with students.
Students intending to major in theater, as well as interested non-majors, are equally welcome to participate in the theater and dance programs at Washington and Lee.
