To apply for transfer admission to Washington and Lee University, you will need to submit the following:
All of these forms are accessible upon registration at the Common Application's website.
Washington and Lee's policy is not to accept students as transfers unless they have earned at least a C (2.0) average on all work attempted at the institution or institutions previously attended. Such an average, however, does not guarantee admission. The successful transfer applicant generally will have achieved at least a B (3.0) average. In 2006, we received 89 transfer applications and offered admission to 21 students.
If admitted, you may not transfer more than 56 credits from all work previously attempted. Credits earned at another institution may be transferred for Washington and Lee credit only when completed with a grade of C (2.0) or higher. Such credits are assigned upon matriculation by the appropriate department head and the University Registrar at the discretion of the appropriate dean. Prior to matriculation, we are unable to evaluate transfer students' transcripts for the purposes of determining what course credit will transfer. It is expected that applicants for transfer will have completed at least one full academic year of study elsewhere, and that they will complete at least two years of full-time study at Washington and Lee prior to receiving their degree.
Further details may be found on the University Registrar's Policies and Procedures page
Applications to transfer in September must be submitted no later than April 1. Candidates seeking entrance in January should submit all required materials by November 1. Transfer applicants are required to submit test results from the SAT I or ACT to the Admissions Office. Applications are accepted for September and January admission only.
If you have never been to Lexington, Virginia, we recommend that you visit campus at some point to take a closer look. Unlike incoming first-year students, transfer applicants do not need to complete an interview, but you can schedule a campus tour and sit in on a group information session. Be sure and check out schedule in advance, as student breaks often fall at different points during the academic year, due to our 12-12-4 calendar.
There are no merit-based scholarships available for transfer students. If you would like to apply for need-based financial aid, you may submit the appropriate forms, available at the Office of Financial Aid. However, please note that funding for transfer students is very limited, and in most cases, we do not have the resources to provide substantial financial aid for transfer students.
If you have questions about the transfer process, please contact our transfer counselor, Robert Koch, Assistant Director of Admissions.
