LEXINGTON, Va. -- Washington and Lee claimed the Old Dominion Athletic Conference Players of the Week for golf, women's lacrosse and women's tennis for the week ending March 23.
Senior Nathaniel James (Keller, Texas/Keller) received the award for golf, freshman Emily Mathews (Baltimore, Md./Bryn Mawr) was honored for women's lacrosse and sophomore Lauren Caire (Nashville, Tenn./Harpeth Hall) was recognized for women's tennis.
James received the golf award as he spearheaded the Generals' ninth-place finish out of 26 teams at the Jekyll Island Collegiate Invitational held on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. James shot a one over par score of 70-71-76--217 en route to finishing third out of 141 golfers at the event. For the year, James is averaging just 72.4 strokes over 13 rounds played.
Mathews, a midfielder, garnered the women's lacrosse award after notching eight goals and one assist in helping lead the Generals to a 2-0 record during the week. On Thursday, she totaled a career-high five goals in a 14-9 win over Roanoke. She followed that performance with three goals and one assist in an 18-5 win over 19th-ranked McDaniel on Saturday. For the season, Mathews has started all nine games and claims 12 goals and three assists for the Generals, who are 8-1 (3-0 ODAC) and ranked eighth in Division III.
Caire was tabbed the women's tennis player of the week after going 3-0 in singles and 3-0 in doubles in a 4-0 week for the team. She is now 15-1 overall in singles and 13-2 in doubles for the season for the 12-0 Generals (9-0 ODAC), who are ranked No. 1 in Division III.
