The Virginia Sports Information Director's Association (VaSID) announced its 2008 College Division All-State Basketball Team on Wednesday afternoon and Washington and Lee claimed one first-team member and the Coach of the Year.
Senior forward Greg Bienemann (Chatham, N.J./Chatham) was named to the five-player first team for the second-straight season after averaging 21.5 points, 7.3 rebounds, 1.7 assists and 0.9 blocks per game this winter in earning First Team All-ODAC honors. He shot 59.2 percent (219-370) from the field and scored in double figures in 24 of the team's 26 games.
Bienemann notched 13 games of 20 or more points, including four 30-point outbursts, highlighted by a career-high 37 points on 17-of-19 shooting in a 98-81 win over Emory & Henry on Feb. 13.
A three-time All-ODAC selection, Bienemann was tabbed to the NABC Second Team All-District and D3hoops.com Third Team All-Region teams earlier this year. He was also named one of 10 finalists for the Division III Player of the Year Award this winter. He led the Generals in scoring and rebounding all four seasons and finished with 1,573 career points, good for sixth all-time at W&L.
Hutchinson received the VaSID College Division Coach of the Year after guiding the Generals to a 15-11 overall record and an 11-7 mark in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference. The 15 wins were the program's most since 1990 and Hutchinson steered the Generals to their highest ODAC tournament seeding (5th) since 1991. He was also named the ODAC Coach of the Year earlier this year.
Shenandoah senior forward Jeremiah Lawrence was named the VaSID Player of the Year, while Ferrum freshman forward Derek Mitchell was selected as the Rookie of the Year.
