Washington and Lee Head Football Coach has announced that the 2008 football team will be travelling to France to play The Paris Flash, a French semi-professional team in June 2009.
The football team is partnering with Global Football Inc., a sports special events and international travel organization. Global Football organizes fantasy football camps for Penn State University and Notre Dame in addition to leading tours abroad for youth and college football teams. Recent trips to Italy, France, Austria and Germany have included such Division III institutions as Augustana College, John Carroll University, Illinois Wesleyan, Adrian College, Central College, Wartburg College and Bluffton College.
"Global Football is a company doing positive things for the game of football and young people in general," said Head Coach Frank Miriello. "We are excited about the educational opportunity our players will have in travelling to Europe and are pleased that we will be playing the Paris Flash in a summer exhibition game."
Generals football will be embarking on a program first; travel aboard with the goal of building team cohesion, learning firsthand about French, American and European history while students also earn course credit. The nine-day trip will include visits to Paris, the cemeteries at the D-Day beaches, tours of various Chateaux in the Loire Valley and French countryside and the exhibition game against the Parisian Club Football Team.
The program and fundraising committee will be chaired by first-year offensive lineman Greg Kurkis and two Washington and Lee graduates.
"My teammates and I are excited about the opportunity to travel together and to play an additional game," said Kirkus, the 2008 ODAC Freshman of the Year. "This really is a unique event that was totally unexpected. Parents, football alumni, school officials and many of our friends will be coming on the trip so it is sure to be educational and a lot of fun. We have a lot of money to raise, but I know that with our hard work and alumni working together, we will achieve our goals."
