@AlternateTextBest of Momix
November 11, 2009 / 8:00 p.m.

Known internationally for blurring the fine line between illusion and reality with mind-blowing inventiveness; the athletic dancers of Momix fool the naked eye with an amazing array of black-light illusions, acrobatic choreography and fantastical props. Led by Pilobolus/Aeros co-founder Moses Pendleton, this special Best of Momix program assembles a quarter century of choreographic highlights from the celebrated dance troupe’s repertoire — Lunar Sea, Opus Cactus, Baseball and other full-length works. His well-trained troupe of performers takes arabesques and pirouettes beyond the limit in performances that a New York Times critic recently noted, "defy the impossible."

It's a must-see evening for long-time fans and the uninitiated alike. Don't miss the very best from a company that continues to capture the imagination of audiences worldwide.

@AlternateTextYamato, The Drummers of Japan
Matsuri - Fiesta
November 17, 2009 / 7:30 p.m.

A massive Nagado-Daiko drum sends non-amplified shock waves through the theater as both a cultural and spiritual tone connect the performers with the audience. Yamato presents taiko drumming as wild excessive physical theater with a mix of athleticism and showbiz. Special-effects lighting fascinates the eyes, ears and, especially with the titanic Odaiko drum, the heart.

Performances are infused with the idea that the drumbeat, like the heartbeat, is the very pulse of life. That pulse grows to a thunder as Yamato’s taiko drummers put their souls into playing the traditional Wadaiko drums that range from the tiny hand held Uchiwa Daiko to the giant Odaiko, made from a 400-year-old tree. Yamato is a group of men and women who have rejuvenated the ancient Japanese tradition of taiko drumming that fuses percussion, choreography and humor into an exhilarating concert. The group draws their inspiration from the ancestral Japanese beliefs about the power of the drum.

@AlternateTextPorgy and Bess
Opera
March 22, 2010 & March 23, 2010 / 7:30 p.m.

Lenfest, Class of ’64 and Concert Guild join together to present Porgy and Bess. Featuring a cast of 30 with live orchestra, the George Gershwin’s Porgy and Bess will celebrate the production’s 75th Anniversary in 2010.

Porgy and Bess is recognized as an American masterpiece. It is a story that intertwines pride, prejudice, pathos and passion through a jazz and blues-influenced score. Originally billed as a “folk opera,” Porgy and Bess introduced classic Gershwin songs including “Summertime,” “I Got Plenty O’ Nuttin” and “It Ain’t Necessarily So,” as well as magnificent and enthralling choruses that stunned music and drama critics alike at its premiere in 1935.

Based on the DuBose Heyward novel set in Charleston’s famed Catfish Row, Porgy and Bess tells the moving story of Porgy, a cripple, who witnesses a murder during a dice game and later gives shelter to the murderer’s woman, the beautiful, haunted Bess. The Catfish Row community is opposed to the union, but Porgy and Bess make each other happy and their happiness only increases when they take in a child orphaned by a hurricane. Their happiness is shattered when the murderer, Crown, returns for Bess and Porgy, defending his family, kills him. The police detain him for questioning but never dream that a cripple could be the killer, so Porgy returns triumphantly to the Row. The triumph turns to tragedy quickly when he learns that, while he was away, Sportin’ Life, the dope pusher and Bess’ former pimp, seduced Bess with “happy dust” and took her away to New York City to resume her career as a prostitute.
