Chamber Orchestra Kremlin, led by Misha Rachlevsky, has earned national and international recognition as one of Russia's leading ensembles. Founded in 1991, the orchestra, comprising some of Russia's finest young string players, has carved a niche for itself. In addition to an active schedule of presenting concerts and festivals in Moscow, Chamber Orchestra Kremlin tours regularly in North and South America, Europe and the Far East. At W&L they will play Bach's Concerto for 2 violins as well as Tchaikovsky's beloved "Serenade for Strings."

For the past twelve years, Cantus has gained recognition as one of America's finest professional male vocal ensembles. As one of the few full-time vocal ensembles in the world, the ensemble enjoys a vigorous schedule of national tours, subscription concerts in the Twin Cities of Minneapolis and Saint Paul, several innovative residencies, educational programs, and recordings. Rehearsing and performing without a conductor, Cantus has been praised by critics for its broad repertoire, bold ensemble singing and engaging stage presentation. Cantus' repertoire spans all periods and genres, including chant, Renaissance music, contemporary works, art song, folk, spirituals, world music, and pop.

Singled out in the 2008 Musical America feature, "Young Artists: More Thrills of Discovery," as one of the "up-and-coming talents" in the classical music world, pianist Di Wu's reputation as an artist to be watched continues to grow. With a repertoire that ranges from Ravel to Brahms to Rachmaninoff, her playing has been noted for its "amazing technique" and "total command." In May 2009, as the winner of the 2008 Juilliard William Petschek Piano Debut Recital Award, she appeared in recital at the Alice Tully Hall in Lincoln Center. At W&L, Wu will present a program entitled "The Art of Transcriptions" that includes works by Rachmaninoff, Liszt, Busoni and Godowksy.

Opera
March 22-23, 2010 / 7:30 p.m.

Concert Guild, Lenfest and Class of ’64 join together to present Porgy and Bess. Featuring a cast of 30 with live orchestra, Gershwin’s Porgy and Bess will celebrate the opera’s 75th Anniversary in 2010.

 

A fully staged production of Gershwin’s masterful “folk-opera” about an African-American community in early twentieth-century Charleston, South Carolina, will feature such great tunes as “Summertime,” “It Ain’t Necessarily So,” “My Man’s Gone,” and “I’m On My Way.”
