
Washington and Lee University’s recycling program is a separate stream operation, which means that participants must usually separate recyclable materials at the collection stations.
Please remember that the contents of recycling containers that are contaminated with other recyclable materials or with trash will not be recycled, they must be taken to the local landfill.

The following materials are recycled in all dorms: mixed paper, aluminum cans, glass containers and plastic #1 - #7. Detergent bottles and other hard plastics are also recycled in the laundry rooms. There are collection stations for each material located at the breezeway of Baker Dorm and the tunnel at Graham-Lees Dorm. Residents may request the use of a crate for their room to collect and transport recyclables to the station. These crates (20" x 24" x 13" high) must be left in your room, clean, when you leave at the end of the year. Contact your Resident Advisor or Facilities Management to request a crate or to have one picked up.
Each fraternity is responsible for establishing a recycling program for the house. Aluminum cans, mixed paper, newspaper, plastic containers #1 - #7, cardboard and tin cans may be recycled but there is no glass recycling available for the fraternities. There may also be someone in the house who will volunteer to be a recycling advocate. This person could be a a brother, cook or custodian. An advocate educates the house community about recycling and helps facilitate the house program.

No recycling services are provided by the University for off campus housing.
Rockbridge County Recycling operates a number of recycling centers for use by county residents. The following materials are recycled at these centers: mixed paper, aluminum cans, scrap metal, tin cans, glass containers, hard plastics #1 - #7, soft plastics (bags and sheeting), cardboard, and newspaper. The new Jailhouse Recycling Center replaced the College Square at the end of October '09. For more information on how to recycle these items and more, please see How to Recycle.
Lexington Public Works provides curb side pickup of the following materials: mixed paper, glass, aluminum, plastic 1-7, glass bottles and jars. All of these materials may be put together in a clear plastic bag and left at the curb on the appropriate day except mixed paper which needs to be placed in a separate bag.
Buena Vista recycling services are provided for free by a contractor using curside collection crates. Aluminum, tin cans, mixed paper and newspaper, plastics and glass bottles and jars.
Clean mixed paper is recycled in all academic buildings. Faculty and staff may request a blue plastic desk-side can or a crate measuring 20" x 24" x 13" for collection and transport of materials to recycling stations. Individuals are responsible for emptying these into larger recycling collection cans located in the hallways. The regular pick up schedule for these cans is Tuesday and Thursday mornings.
"Clean mixed paper" includes computer and copier paper, soft and hard back books, junk mail, newspapers and magazines. Staples do not need to be removed and an occasional paper clip is OK but metal or plastic spiral bound documents are not. Please do not put corrugated cardboard, food containers or trash in the mixed paper bins.
