Internships in Sociology, Internships in Anthropology
The Sociology & Anthropology Department offers several formal internship opportunities for students, with preference for our majors. In addition, students are also encouraged to design their own internships with input from specific department members.
The course numbers for Sociology internships are 453 (3 credits), 456 (6 credits), and 459 (9 credits). Prerequisites: Grade point average of 2.500 in Sociology and 2.500 overall, and permission of staff. Supervised off-campus experience in a social service agency, research organization or project, or therapeutic or custodial institution. May be repeated for degree credit with permission and if the topics are different. Please see Professors Novack or Cintron for more specific information.
Internship at the Eagle's Nest Clubhouse: Mental Illness Program – 3 credits. David Novack
The Eagle's Nest is a pre-vocational day treatment facility for chronically mentally ill adults. In addition to time spent at the program site, interns participate in a weekly tutorial which focuses on readings in the sociology of mental illness.
Internship with Virginia District Court Judge – 3 credits. David Novack
The intern meets regularly with Judge Saunders to discuss cases that are being adjudicated and attends court sessions. In addition, a lengthy paper is prepared which focuses on either a particular case or a series of similar cases, with the primary focus on the interconnections between legal and social-cultural factors.
Internship with Commonwealth's Attorney, Lexington- Rockbridge County – 3 credits. David Novack
The intern is responsible for various facets of a criminal case from the time of arrest through final adjudication, including sentencing. A lengthy paper is required which involves researching and analyzing a case in the context of a particular area of criminal law (such as rape or child abuse).

Supervised anthropology laboratory or off-campus experience in a museum, research organization, cultural program, social service, or archaeological collection management. Colored School Historical Society – 3 credits. Pre-requisite: ANTH 101 or course(s) in African American Studies Program.
The student will help design and implement a website to showcase the mission and accomplishments of the Buena Vista Colored School Historical Society. Readings will address issues pertaining to museums, representation, education, online communication, and race/racism.
Internship at the Monocan Indian Village at Natural Bridge – 3 credits. Pre-requisite: ANTH 101, ANTH 224 or ANTH 285. Goluboff
The student will help to design and implement prehistoric and colonial era material culture pertaining to the lifeways of the Monocan Indians. The intern will also aid in facilitating discussion and exploration of Monocan Indian history with visitors to the Natural Bridge Complex. Readings will address issues pertaining to the anthropology of museums, representation, and performance.
