W&L Women's Cross Country Wins ODAC Title; Men Finish Third Overall

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – The Washington and Lee women’s cross country team claimed its fifth-straight Old Dominion Athletic Conference title on Saturday morning at Virginia Wesleyan College. The W&L men placed third overall, just nine points away from winning its fifth-straight conference crown.

The women scored 23 points in taking four of the top seven individual places and finishing 25 points ahead of the second place team, Roanoke College. The men finished just nine points behind team champion Lynchburg College and seven points behind Virginia Wesleyan, the second place team.

The women were paced by senior Jessica Shaw (Dallas, Texas/Highland Park). Shaw won the race with a time of 21:41 en route to being named the ODAC Runner of the Year. Senior Elizabeth Webb (Middleburg, Va./Wakefield School) finished as the runner-up with a time of 21:54 and senior Becca Taylor (Hamilton, Ohio/Edgewood) placed fourth overall, crossing the tape in 22:26. Taylor was also named the ODAC Women’s Cross Country Scholar-Athlete of the Year for the third-straight year. Junior Dorothy Todd (Watkinsville, Ga./Athens Academy) joined Shaw, Webb and Taylor as a First Team All-ODAC honoree after placing seventh with a time of 22:52.

Junior Kat Telfeyan (Chesapeake, Va./Great Bridge) and sophomores Katherine Fenwick (Berwyn, Pa./Conestoga) and Christine Balistreri (Mequon, Wisc./Homestead) all earned Second Team All-ODAC laurels. Telfeyan finished ninth overall (23:06), Fenwick placed 11th (23:22) and Balistreri completed the course in 23:32 for a 14th-place finish.

W&L Head Coach Kris Hoey was tabbed the ODAC Women’s Cross Country Coach of the Year for the fifth-straight year.

Senior Michael Welsh (Tullahoma, Tenn./Tullahoma) led the W&L men with a third-place finish, completing the course in a time of 25.33. He also received the ODAC Men's Cross Country Scholar-Athlete of the Year Award. Welsh was joined on the All-ODAC First Team by senior Vance Berry (Ponte Vedra Beach, Fa./Episcopal), who finished fifth overall with a time of 25:44. Sophomore Jack Ivy (Memphis, Tenn./White Station) earned Second Team All-ODAC accolades after finishing eighth overall (25:54), while senior Alex Jackson (Centreville, Va./Westfield) finished 20th overall with a time of 26:37.

The Generals will return to action on November 15 as they participate in the NCAA South/Southeast Region Championship held at Texas Lutheran in San Antonio, Texas.
