Need Based Aid

Returning students receiving need-based grant assistance must re-apply each year.  The application includes the CSS PROFILE, parent and student 2009 tax returns, FAFSA, and other relevant tax documents (see below for details.)  Please complete your 2009 tax returns before submitting the Profile or FAFSA.  To avoid any delay in processing your aid a complete financial aid application should be on file in the Financial Aid office by June 1, 2010.

Non Custodial Parent (NCP) Form (if relevant)

Business/Farm Supplement (if relevant)

Parent and Student Federal Tax Returns

Special Financial Circumstances (if relevant)

College Scholarship Service PROFILE

  • Primary application for Washington and Lee University need-based grant
  • Complete the PROFILE on-line at profileonline.collegeboard.com
  • Washington and Lee University school code: 5887

    • 9a.m. to 6p.m. EST
    • 8a.m. to 10p.m. January-April 2010 

    Caution: Complete the PROFILE at least one week prior to the deadline to allow time for the document to reach Washington and Lee.

Non-Custodial PROFILE

  • Required of need-based grant applicants with divorced, separated, or unmarried parents.
  • Supplement to the PROFILE.
  • Custodial parent provides contact information for Non-Custodial parent when completing the PROFILE. 
  • Non-Custodial parent will then receive access to the Non-Custodial PROFILE via email.

Caution—The Non-custodial PROFILE is not optional. Complete the Non-Custodial PROFILE at least one week prior to deadline to allow time for the document to reach Washington and Lee. Contact the Washington and Lee University Financial Aid Office at tel. (540) 458-8716 if submission presents problems. Carefully determine which parent is custodial by reading the PROFILE instructions.

 Business Farm Supplement

  • Required of need-based applicants whose parent(s) (custodial and/or non-custodial):
    • are self-employed
    • own a business or farm
    • have significant interest in a partnership, sub-chapter’s corporation, or standard corporation
  • Access via PROFILE

Tax Returns
  • Required of applicants for need-based Washington and Lee grants
  • Provide 2009 returns when complete. 
  • Include all:
    • W-2 forms, K-1s, schedules, forms, etc.
    • Complete 2009 business returns for business/farm owners or those with significant interest in other business entities.
  • Forward IRS form 4868 if an extension for filing has been requested.
  • Please do not forward state tax returns

Special Financial Circumstances (if relevant)
  • Special or unusual situations beyond the family's control which limit the family’s ability to afford educational costs. For example:
    • loss of employment
    • bankruptcy
    • serious illness
  • Send a note or email to the Financial Aid Office detailing the circumstances and impact on family finances.

  • Required for establishing eligibility for federal loans, grants, and college work study.
