Using a computer with wireless capability, open a Web browser (such as Internet Explorer or Firefox). If your device is within range of a W&L wireless access point, you will see a wireless log-in page for W&L. The University's two wireless services are called "WireLessOne" and "WireLessTwo." Log in to the page with your W&L network username and password; after logging in, you'll be able to use the network.
W&L has about 250 access points throughout the campus, covering nearly all campus buildings. However, wireless coverage of student residential areas is limited to the following:
Additional residential halls and other buildings are being added to wireless coverage; here is a tentative schedule for those projects:
Washington and Lee's wireless network uses the 802.11b standard, which is compatible with nearly all modern wireless network cards. Some portions of the wireless network also support the 802.11a and 802.11g standards.
Security warning: W&L's wireless network is currently not a secure means of transmitting information. Anyone using the network to transmit sensitive information should take precautions such as the use of Web sites incorporating SSL technology (a padlock symbol should appear in the address bar), and the use of W&L's Virtual Private Network (VPN). These precautions are also recommended when using other insecure wireless networks, such as those commonly found in airports and hotels. See instructions here on how to access W&L's VPN.
