Why am I sometimes charged for a 1 minute long distance call that is not answered?
If you let the phone ring or listen to a busy signal for thirty seconds or more, you will be billed for that call. To avoid being billed for the call, hang up before thirty seconds has elapsed (which is the usually about four rings).
How can I check my PhoneMail while I am away from campus?
If your W&L extension ends in an even number, dial (540) 458-8080 OR if your W&L extension ends in an odd number, dial (540) 458-8090. You will then need to put in your extension number followed by a "# "; then enter your password followed by a "#". Please remember that you have to call from a phone that has touch tone services.
My phone doesn't ring. What should I do?
Make sure that your phone isn't in Do Not Disturb. If your DND red light is on, your Do Not Disturb feature is activated which deactivates your ringer. To turn it off, just press the button. Also, be sure to check on the bottom of your phone to make sure the slide button is positioned toward the center. This slider bar controls the volume of your ringer.
My phone is not working. What should I do?
First, unplug the phone from the wall jack and from the back of the phone and reconnect them. Many times this will correct the problem. If this doesn't work, please put in a Work Order Request.
I dialed the PhoneMail system but it won't accept my extension number. What is wrong?
There are three common mistakes that can cause this problem. Probably the most common mistake is forgetting to include the "#" after you put in your extension number. The PhoneMail system also requires you to dial in on the proper number (8080 if your extension ends in an even number; 8090 if it ends in an odd number). The PhoneMail system requires residents of double rooms to include a "1" or a "2" after their extension number. If you live in a double room, you must add a "1" to your extension number if your last name is first alphabetically, or add a "2" to your extension if your name is last alphabetically. For example, if you live in a double room and your extension is 9000, you must call the PhoneMail system on 8080, then dial 90001 or 90002 (depending on your last name).
The PhoneMail lady says that my mailbox is protected. What has happened and how did it get that way?
As a security precaution, the PhoneMail system is set to lock your mailbox after five unsuccessful attempts to get in. When this happens, you must contact the Telecommunications Office at extension 4000 to have your PhoneMail box reset.
Can I change my phone to ring only 1 or 2 times and then go to PhoneMail?
Sorry, the 4 rings before going to PhoneMail is system wide and can't be changed.
