The original statue of George Washington known as "Old George," which sat atop Washington Hall, was carved by Matthew Kahle from a log found floating in the nearby Maury River.
All students at Washington and Lee abide by an honor system, administered entirely by the student body. This means they may schedule their own final exams, most of which are unproctored, and that the library and other classrooms are open 24 hours a day.
