Teaching Programs Operating in More than One Country
- ESL Language Centers offer teaching opportunities in Asia, the Middle East, and Latin America. For information on their programs, contact Susan Matson, Director of Field Operations, 310-342-4190/ fax 310-649-5231/ e-mail smatson@els.com.
- Global Routes offers internships as teachers and community service workers through programs in Costa Rica, Ecuador, Kenya, the Navajo Nation, and Thailand. There are program fees for participation, ranging from $3550 for a summer program to $3950 for a semester program.
- Princeton-in-Asia offers over 60 one and two year (mostly teaching) internship assignments in 9 Asian countries, including China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Kazakhstan, Malaysia, Singapore, South Korea, Thailand, and Vietnam. Participants are paid a local wage. Information is available from W&L's Office of International Education.
- Teaching Abroad/Projects Abroad is a U.K. based organization which offers teaching and other internship opportunities in India, Ghana, Mexico, Russia and the Ukraine, China, and Brazil. Fees range from $2-3000 including room and board
- Volunteers in Asia is based at the Stanford University campus. VIA sends 30-40 college graduates yearly as volunteer English teachers to Indonesia, Laos, Vietnam and China. They also offer a 6-week summer volunteer program for undergraduates.
- WorldTeach sends volunteers overseas to teach in Namibia, South Africa, China, Thailand, Vietnam, Lithuania, Poland, Costa Rica, Ecuador, and Mexico on a mix of year long and summer programs. There is a program fee of approximately $4000 for the year long programs.

China
- The China Teaching Program at Western Washington University offers a training and placement program for people interested in teaching English (and other subjects) in the People's Republic of China. Applicants must have a B.A. or B.S., be a native English speaker, and have an interest in teaching. There is a 5-week pre-departure orientation during the summer, followed by a one year teaching assignment in China. The placement/training fee is $1100.00.
- Colorado China Council has one of the largest and most comprehensive programs in the U.S. to prepare and provide teachers to Chinese schools, colleges and universities. Chinese institutions need educated, native speakers of English ready and willing to go to work in Chinese secondary schools, language and business institutes, colleges and universities to teach English, and sometimes additional subjects, to Chinese students. You do NOT need to know any Chinese. You DO need a bachelors degree or better in any field, excellent mental and physical health, a good GPA, some international travel experience, and a strong interest coupled with personal determination and flexibility. Chinese schools typically provide on-campus housing in apartments, faculty rank, excellent salary in the Chinese local economy, one month of paid vacation, medical care as provided for all faculty members, and a host of interested, dedicated students.
- Council's Teach in China program is an exciting, affordable opportunity to teach English to Chinese college students and to participate in the daily life of a country where traditional ways meet with the upcoming challenges and demands of the 21st century. Teach in China is designed to be self-financing - you will be paid locally, and receive room and board from your host institution. Full academic year as well as semester and summer opportunities are available. A Training Course is conducted prior to departure. Council organizes an intensive 9 day training course and provides a specially designed ESL/EFL curriculum for all participants who are without substantial experience or qualification in Teaching English as a Second/Foreign Language.
- IEF Education Foundation is sponsoring an English Teaching Internship Program in China in order to foster greater intercultural understanding, to encourage international exchange, and to advocate the use of American English as a global language. IEF is a nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting American education overseas. Selected candidates will participate as English language instructors in a program designed to support the Ministry of Education's goal of enhancing the English language skills of Chinese students. IEF appreciates the support of CEAIE and SEAIE for making this program possible. Teaching assignments will begin in fall 2000. Mandatory training and orientation sessions will be conducted by IEF in late September prior to leaving for China. Internship participants will be assigned to teach English at accredited public high schools or junior high schools near Beijing or Shanghai. Teaching schedule is Monday through Friday with an average of 5 hours of instruction per day. Qualifications: Minimum AA degree or 2 years equivalent education from an accredited college or university in the United States with good academic standing. Interest in international education or TEFL/TESL as a future career. A monthly stipend of 2000 RMB, a paid two-week vacation in China (up to $1000 RMB) for each 6-month teaching period, and on-campus housing or equivalent designed for international faculty will be provided. Roundtrip airfare to China is not included. - Marshall University's Appalachians Abroad Program offers one year placements for those with a bachelor's degree as an English teacher at universities around China. For further information contact the program at Marshall University Center for International Programs, 304-696-6265, cip@marshall.edu. The application deadline is March 15.
- Shanghai Summer Teaching Program through WorldTeach
- ZHONGHUA SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM (ZSP)2000 Established by WCCEC and educational institutions in China in 1994, the ZHONGHUA SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM (ZSP) is a unique international exchange program that combines study abroad, teaching EFL and cultural education. Each year, an average of 16 native speakers of English (United States, Australia, Canada and U.K.) are accepted to participate in the ZSP, ranging from Sophomore to MA degree holders. A list of past participants will be provided to applicants whose application materials are complete. Benefits include: a.. All travel expenses (round trip) to and from the host school in China b.. Room and board (single occupancy in shared apartment with modern facilities) c.. 8 hrs/week of one-to-one Chinese study under the Personal Tutorial System d.. 10-15 hrs/week of English teaching to K-12 students e.. A paid cultural tour (about one-week) at the end of the program f.. A paid winter vocation (about 3 weeks) around the Chinese New Year g.. Medical insurance (NOT covering hospitalization and major surgery) h.. Monthly stipend (2,000 Yuan or more, about the salary of a professor in China). All applicants accepted into the program are required to participate in the one-week Orientation Program at the Guangdong University of Foreign Studies in Guangzhou. Accommodation and training materials are provided for all participants during the Orientation. Each participant is responsible for a US$600 fee (not covered by the scholarship) to defray the cost. All participants should make their own travel arrangements and should plan to arrive in Guangzhou on the date specified in the Acceptance Letter. There is no application fee. - U.S.-China Education Services seeks to promote international education and cross-cultural understanding between China and the United States by serving as a bridge between ESL (English as a Second Language) teachers from the United States and a variety of Chinese schools and universities in different parts of China. We offer excellent short-term (semester-long) and long-term (year-long) teaching assignments in large cities such as Beijing, Shanghai, Nanjing, Guangzhou, Changsha, Shenyang, Shijiazhuang, as well as small towns such as Suzhou, Wuxi, Zhenjiang, Changzhou, Nantong, Xuzhou, Huaian, and Lianyungang among many others.
France
Americans may apply for positions as teaching assistants in public French secondary schools (lycées) through a program sponsored by the the French Ministry of Education and the Cultural Services at the French Embassy. This program offers between 1,000 and 1,700 teaching assistant position in French primary and secondary schools and in Instituts universitaires de formation des maîtres (IUFMs) in all regions of France and the DOM-TOMS to persons who fulfill the following requirements :
- You are an American citizen (or have a green card)
- You are between 20 and 34 years of age as of October 1, 2005
- You are currently pursuing or have already attained a college degree
- You are proficient in French. Students without a major or minor in French but with a basic proficiency (about 3 semesters) in French can apply
Hungary and Romania
The Central European Teaching Program is a non-profit, volunteer teaching organization which has been working to enable badly-needed English teachers to work in Central and Eastern Europe since 1990. Sending nearly 100 native English-speaking teachers per year to Hungary, Poland, Romania and Latvia, CETP represents a significant presence in Central Europe. The position offered is that of English Conversation teacher at the elementary, high-school, or tertiary level. Positions for dual language teachers of English and German or of English and French are also offered, and also some for teachers of American civilization and culture.
Japan
- AEON specializes in teaching English to High-School, University, and Adult students who have a genuine desire to increase their English abilities with 260 schools around Japan.
- Earlham College's Teaching English in Japan Program places graduates in two-year teaching assignments in Japanese schools. Contact the program office for more information at 1-888-685-2726.
- JET is a program sponsored by the Japanese government which places over 5000 foreign language teachers in Japanese schools each year. These paid assignments are for one year.
- GEOS Language Corp. has over 400 language schools around Japan and seeks teachers with a B.A. degree.
- Nova Intercultural Institute offers the opportunity to spend a year living and teaching in Japan. They offer paid training, promotional opportunities, assistance with accommodation, flight arrangements, and a wide support network that covers everything from medical assistance to an initial salary advance to help get you settled in Japan. Over the past fifteen years, Nova ICI has developed into the largest private language school in Japan with over 2000 teachers in 200 schools most of which are located in Tokyo and Osaka.

Korea
Due to the difficulties some EFL teachers have had in Korea, there are lists ('black lists' and 'white lists') of schools purporting to tell which are the good and bad schools for which to work. One such list is found here .
- ESL Language Centers recruits teachers for its programs in Korea through Dori Marcellino of Global Classrooms at 310-815-1977/fax 310-815-1978.
- Fulbright English Teaching Assistantship program places young Americans as English conversation teachers in secondary schools outside of Seoul.
Mongolia
- Colorado Asia Council has a fledgling program in Mongolia which requires people who are very independent, conscientious, flexible and adventurous. As of November, 1997, the program for 1998-'99 is still pending due to recent changes and increasing availability in Mongolia of U.S. Peace Corps volunteers. They hope to have the program finalized by early 1998.

Nepal
- Educate the Children (ETC) offers volunteer teaching positions with schools in Nepal. Participants pay a registration fee ($500.00) and their own airfare to Nepal, but room and board are covered while there. Information is available in the OIE Resource Room (Teaching Abroad) and from ETC, PO Box 414, Ithaca, NY 14851, 607-272-1176.
- Grahung Kalika, an NGO operating in western Nepal to promote education, health and agricultural development in the region. Contact them for teaching and other volunteer opportunities at Grahung Kalika, Walling Municipallity 2, Bartung, Syangja, NEPAL.
- Himalayan Explorers Club (HEC). The Himalayan Explorers Club (HEC) is a non-profit organization dedicated to assisting locals and travelers to the Himalayan region. HEC has compiled a volunteer information packet for those interested in volunteering in Nepal. (See Section II.) The HEC also now arranges English teaching positions in Nepal. The program consists of language and culture training in Kathmandu, followed by placement in an English-teaching positions in a village. Russia/Former Soviet Union
- Project Harmony arranges teaching (ESL) positions with schools in several cities in Russia and in Ukraine. The positions require a 6 month-1 year commitment. Participants pay a $2150.00 fee which include the placement, housing, round trip air fare to Russia, and visa. Teachers must assume the costs of food and daily living. The positions are not paid.
Taiwan
- ESL Language Centers recruits teachers for its programs in Taiwan through Luisa Sia, fax 862-2397-2304.
- With 15 schools all over Taiwan, ELSI has the largest Adult English Program and one of the largest Children's Programs in Taiwan. http://www.geocities.com/Athens/7304/
- Hess Language School, Taiwan's largest children's English school, with over seventy branches island wide and over 30,000 students enrolled, recruits teachers from English speaking countries around the world.
- YMCA's Overseas Service Corps Teaching English in Taiwan Program offers paid 'volunteer' positions as an English teacher in a YMCA in Taiwan. You must have a Bachelor's degree.
