Re: Employment Eligibility Verification Form and tax withholding forms

W&L is required by federal law to have all new employees complete an Employment Eligibility Verification Form (also known as the I-9 form) before they begin work, and to review and attest, under penalty of perjury, that the University has reviewed ORIGINAL documents of certain specified types to prove their lawful identity and eligibility to work in the United States. Some departments have, for student and temporary workers, been allowed to accept and complete I-9 forms in their departments rather than send the employee to HR. Because the regulations change periodically, and the civil fines and criminal penalties are hefty, effective immediately, this will be centralized in HR.

Hiring supervisors and administrative assistants involved in the details of hiring and rehiring should send ALL new and rehired employees, whether full-time, part-time, temporary, OR student worker, to Kim Austin or Sherry Wright in Human Resources BEFORE the employee starts working to complete their I-9 forms and all other required employee paperwork.

Thank you for your help on this important compliance issue.

If you have questions, please feel free to contact Kim Austin or Sherry Wright in Human Resources.
