The Baldridge Reading & Study Skills Program at Washington and Lee University August 16, 2023

Dear Washington and Lee University Student:

As a service to Washington and Lee University students, we have again been invited by Washington and Lee's First-Year Experience office to conduct a special program to improve reading and learning skills in academic subjects. Over the past 35 years, hundreds of Washington and Lee students have enrolled in our program and because of our degree of success at Washington and Lee University, we are very honored to be invited back again this year.

This opportunity can significantly influence both the quantity and quality of work in college. The most important characteristic of this particular program is that students use their own textbooks and leisure reading during instruction. By learning in their own academic reading materials -- HISTORY, PSYCHOLOGY, BIOLOGY, ENGLISH LITERATURE and so forth, students can see immediate results in their own studies.

The program includes a broad range of techniques designed to increase reading speed, improve comprehension, deepen concentration and strengthen recall. The program also includes techniques for completing research papers and for developing critical analysis. In addition, many students benefit from practical strategies for overcoming procrastination, taking better organized lecture notes, budgeting time more wisely, and preparing more thoroughly for tests and examinations.

Baldridge Reading is an organization of reading specialists with over sixty years of experience in teaching at college campuses across the country. Scheduling will be flexible to accommodate individual academic schedules. There are no specific out-of-class assignments; the skills are automatically strengthened and refined when students use them while studying for their regular courses using their own textbooks.

Please consider whether this opportunity would be appropriate for you. By arranging to provide this program through the college, the cost is considerably lower than it would be otherwise. Because of the potential that it holds for improving academic, career and leisure reading, it would be time and money well spent. Our "free repeat" policy allows students to participate as many times as you wish during your years at Washington and Lee. To register, follow the directions given below.
