Louis Marshall President, Washington College, 1830-1834
Louis Marshall was born in Fauquier County, Va., in 1773, one of 10 brothers of Chief Justice John Marshall. He became a physician after studies in in Philadelphia; Edinburgh, Scotland; and Paris, France. He practiced medicine in Kentucky and then became an educator there. At Washington College, he introduced a new academic regime providing great flexibility to the students, who then totaled only 19. Marshall essentially eliminated all requirements and placed the obligation of completion in the hands of the student. Facing personal financial challenges, Marshall left the college in 1834 for Kentucky.
