Howard Laurent Boetsch Jr.

Acting President, Washington and Lee University, 2001–2002

H. Laurent Boetsch obtained a B.A. (1969) in Spanish from W&L and an M.A. (1973) and a doctorate of modern languages (1981) from Middlebury College. He joined the faculty of the W&L Romance Languages Department in 1976, teaching Spanish. In 1996, he joined the administration, serving as dean of the College and vice president of academic affairs. Boetsch took on a four-year assignment in Berlin, Germany, as president of the European College of Liberal Arts. Upon his return to W&L, he resumed his post as professor of Spanish and became the director of the Center for International Education. He is also an executive director of the European Consortium of Liberal Arts and Sciences. The W&L Board of Trustees established the Laurent and Elizabeth Boetsch Honor Scholarship in 2002 to recognize the leadership he provided as the 23rd president of W&L.
