Harlan Ray Beckley Acting President, Washington and Lee University, 2005-2006
Harlan Ray Beckley received a B.S. in economics from the University of Illinois and a Ph.D. in Christian theological ethics from Vanderbilt University. He first came to W&L in 1974, when he accepted a faculty appointment in the Department of Religion. In 1997, he helped to create and became the first director of the Shepherd Program. In 1999, Beckley was named the Fletcher Otey Thomas Professor of Religion, and in 2002, he received the State Council of Higher Education for Virginia‘s Outstanding Faculty Award.
