Gina Werfel Divided Light

Gina Werfel's colorful paintings combine a focused mastery of composition with an exuberant spontaneity. The canvases are dense with lyrical marks that often remain non-representational but occasionally coalesce to imply familiar subject matter, such as a hint of landscape, informed by her history as a plein air painter. "Improvisation is at the root of my practice," the artist says of her energetic works that poise between chaos and structure, abstraction and representation. Werfel's extensive exhibition record includes recent solo shows at Google Headquarters (Mountain View, California) and Prince Street Gallery (New York City).  She is a Professor of Art at the University of California Davis
