Campus Fitness Walking Opportunities

Whether you are losing momentum in the 60 Miles and 60 Days Challenge, or if you would like to get out and enjoy the fall foliage, Patti Colliton is leading walks around back campus for people who want an opportunity to get out and exercise. Walks are at 12:10pm on Thursdays, and 5:00pm on Mondays through the end of October. You may contact Patti (x8287) the day of the walk if the weather is questionable. Each walk will require athletic footwear and active, weather appropriate clothing. This is a great opportunity to learn the campus walking trails.

Power of Two Wellness Challenge deadline TODAY

The Power of Two wellness program begins on September 21. You can participate with a partner or on your own. The Power of Two is about making small changes in your daily life that can have meaningful and long-lasting effects on your health. Over the course of 8 weeks, you will be given practical and achievable challenges that will help you improve your diet, lose weight, and become more fit. In this program you will have plenty of support! Many of the activities can be done with a partner so you have a friend or coworker to support, encourage, and motivate you. That's the Power of Two! You can also team up with several people if you want. A buddy is not required, although recommended. If weight loss is not your goal, you can still participate and get credit for the program. Many of the activities, such as evaluating what you eat or getting more exercise, are important for everyone. When it asks you to cut calories from your daily diet, however, you can just focus on eating healthier foods. YOUR goal would be to get healthier calories rather than fewer of them. (We trust you to stay in the spirit of the program and modify your goals accordingly.) All of the materials and information that you will need can be found on the Evolve Wellness Portal at www.bebetterhealth.net, on the My Programs page. Program Details: • The program will begin on September 21 and end on November 14. • Registration deadline is 7pm on September 21. • Earn 25 incentive points upon completion.

Once again, if you completed a biometric screening during the 2014-15 year, you will automatically have 1000 points and the screening is optional for the 2015-16 year. New this year: 2250 point goal: The primary care and prevention compliance is no longer a requirement. You can meet your goal with only 2250 points. You can earn points for optional preventative exams of your choice such as: annual physical, well woman exam, skin screening, mammogram, prostate screening, or colorectal exam. Chronic Disease Management Program (worth 50 points): Chronic disease management is designed for individuals with chronic conditions, or caregivers of individuals with chronic conditions. These workshops teach techniques to deal with symptoms, skills for managing medication, and more. You Can Live Well! (or the Chronic Disease Self-Management Program) is a free, 6-week interactive workshop designed to empower adults with ongoing health conditions, as well as their family members, in order to achieve a better quality of life. Classes will be on Thursdays from 3:30-6:00, starting on October 1, 2015. Participants are invited to participate and earn credit for other disease management programs that more directly address their needs such as diabetes self-management or pulmonary disease management. Smoking Cessation (worth 25-50 points): Smoking Cessation is available through the Evolve Wellness program and also offered by Anthem, at no charge. The breatheBetter program is an easy-to-follow, 3-step process to help you quit smoking. Weight management program (worth 50 points): You can earn 50 points for a minimum of 12 weeks participation in a weight management program. Eligible programs are ones that are designed to be safe and effective. They should include: a plan to keep the weight off over the long run, guidance on how to develop healthier eating habits, ongoing feedback, monitoring, and support, and slow and steady weight loss goals (usually ½-2 pounds per week). First Wellness Challenge: Coast To Coast

Ready to take a trip across the country? In this physical activity challenge, we’ll travel 3,100 miles across our homeland, stopping at 7 cities along the way. Don’t worry, you don’t actually have to walk 3,100 miles! (Unless you think you can do it!) We’ll jump to each city and explore them on foot, explaining what you could see if you walked or ran the most notable landmarks. In this challenge, we encourage you to get out and walk or run at least 2.5 hours per week. You can do this right outside your front door. But we also encourage you to try new places near you – parks, walking trails, historical areas, city blocks. You may find some terrific outdoor spaces that you didn’t even know about. There are great parks and walking areas throughout our country – from coast to coast. Find the ones near you!
