Child Care

Parental Leave

Eligible employees must request parental leave in writing to their supervisor (staff) or department head (faculty) ninety (90) days in advance of the requested leave start date (or as early as possible in the planning phase of an adoption process). The Executive Director of Human Resources approves staff requests and the appropriate Dean approves faculty requests for parental leave. Parental leave is independent of other time off or sick leave benefits and runs concurrently with FMLA (Family and Medical Leave Act).

Nursing Mothers

W&L supports nursing mothers by providing reasonable break time for an employee to express breast milk for her nursing child for one year after the child’s birth. Assistance is provided in locating a place (other than a bathroom) that is shielded from view and free from intrusion from coworkers and the public to be used to express breast milk. Refrigeration may be provided by Human Resources for the storage of expressed breast milk during the work day.

Summer Camp Programs

Washington and Lee hosts area summer camp programs at a camp fair each spring in Elrod Commons. This is a great opportunity to meet with representatives from the camps and get a head start on planning your child's summer. We also maintain a listing of summer camps for your reference.

Babysitting

W&L provides employees access to babysitters, house-sitters, tutors, etc. through Care.com. To check out their services, go to www.care.com/wlu and register using your W&L email address. You can search for providers in this area, or, if you are traveling out of town and would like to take your children with you, search for providers in the city you are visiting!

Care.com is recruiting for providers in this area. Encourage your favorite sitter to register as a provider at www.care.com. W&L students should use http://www.care.com/edu/washington-and-lee-university.

Faculty Meeting Child Care

Woods Creek Montessori and Yellow Brick Road will remain open until 6 pm for University faculty meetings, College faculty meetings and College department head meetings. This program is open to children currently enrolled at Woods Creek or Yellow Brick Road. Woods Creek Montessori will also accommodate previously enrolled children up to 8 years old. Childcare facilities must have up- to-date registration information on each child. You must register by 4 pm one week prior to the date of the meeting to allow YBR and WCM to staff appropriately. The extended hours may not be held if less than 5 children register.

Back-Up Care

Have a 'last minute' need? Use Care on Call for back up child care, elder care, pet care, etc. The University subsidizes 60% of last minute or emergency child and elder care that allows you to attend to work responsibilities, up to $200 per employee per year. Use this reimbursement form.
