Congratulations on your expanding family! Here are some resources to make this transition a smoother one.
Parental Leave Policies
The policies will give you an overview of how your parental leave will work for you.
Requesting Parental Leave
Eligible employees must request parental leave in writing to their supervisor (staff) or department head (faculty) ninety (90) days in advance of the requested leave start date (or as early as possible in the planning phase of an adoption process). The Executive Director of Human Resources approves staff requests and the appropriate Dean approves faculty requests for parental leave. Parental leave is independent of other time off or sick leave benefits and runs concurrently with FMLA (Family and Medical Leave Act).
All employees requesting parental leave must complete the online Parental Leave Form and make an appointment with Deborah Stoner. Please complete the FMLA Request form and bring with you to your appointment.
You will want to add the new addition to health insurance. You have 31 days from the date of birth/adoption whether your coverage is through W&L or another employer. For your convenience, you may want to go ahead and complete the enrollment form with as much information as possible and return the form to HR. Then, when the baby is born, you can call with "missing" information and we'll finish the form for you. You will need to provide a birth certificate or proof of birth from the hospital to enroll the child.
If you are covered by our group dental insurance plan through UCCI, you can add your baby within 31 days of his/her birth or during any annual open enrollment period (held each spring with a July 1 effective date) using the UCCI enrollment form.
You may want to make changes to your group life insurance beneficiaries. To do so, you should complete the Group Life Insurance Enrollment form and return it to Human Resources. If you want to change beneficiaries on your retirement account, please contact TIAA/CREF and/or Fidelity directly.
To make a change to tax withholding allowances (which you can do at anytime), you'll complete new federal and state tax withholding forms and return to HR.
Future Moms Program
If you are enrolled in our group health insurance plan through Anthem, then you're eligible to register for their Future Moms Program. You've have access 24/7 to an RN who can answer questions about important topics such as pregnancy, labor, and nursing, and you'll receive a helpful prenatal care book - "Your Pregnancy Week by Week." The sooner you enroll, the more you'll benefit from the program.
Call Anthem at 1-800-828-5891 to get started.
Many employees have private offices that make pumping more convenient. If you do not have a private office, or if your work space otherwise lacks privacy, we will work with you to find a lactation space that is convenient and private. Contact Human Resources to begin this process.
If you'll need infant care, you'll want to get on the waiting list(s) as soon as possible as there are only two local licensed providers: Laura and Rhonda's (540-463-5997) and Yellow Brick Road. A more complete listing of resources is available on our Dependent Care page.
