Erosion of the Andes in NW Argentina Argentina 2011

In July of 2011, Professors David Harbor and Jeff Rahl, and Geology Majors Ryan Hartman '12, and Doug Sberna '13 undertook fieldwork to characterize the erosion of the western margin of the Puna Plateau. The group spent time in the jungle collecting sediments recording the erosion of the mountain front over the last 5- 6 million years. They also continued GPS surveys of the plateau basin to uncover the geomorphic history of this rapidly erosion region. Aside from exploring the incredibly diverse geological phenomena, the group enjoyed Andean culture and food, a break from the Virginia heat during Argentine winter, hiking to 4500 m, and numerous 4-wheel-drive adventures. The project takes off from the findings generated by Kristin Staffo '11 and Caroline Bovay '11, who wrote Honors Theses based on the 2010 field work.
